WHAT IS A COOKIE?
Cookies, by definition, are small pieces of information, usually consisting of just letters and numbers, which online services provide when users visit them. Software and browsers on the user’s different devices can store cookies and send them back to the website next time they visit.
Cookies and similar technologies are a specific method that store information between website visits. They are used in several ways, such as:
- Remembering what’s in an online shopping basket;
- Supporting users to log in to a website;
- Analysing traffic; or
- Tracking users’ browsing behaviour.
Cookies allow a website to recognise a user’s device and are widely used to make websites work, or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the site. Without cookies, or other similar technology, websites would have no way to ‘remember’ anything about visitors (e.g. items in an online shopping basket or whether they are logged in. These cookies can be shared with other organisations or advertisers. Typically, they are persistent and of third-party provenance.
